Dental Leadership is a Team Sport

Posted on October 4, 2022October 4, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
Dental Leadership is a Team Sport

Every

Dental Team Member

is a

Hero and a Leader

Each team member has leadership skills!

Learn about each team member and empower their strengths!

Bi-Directional Leadership

Great leaders reduce team turnover by UP-skilling AND RE-skilling team members.
Let’s look at Bi-Directional Leadership as the first step to creating a happy, engaged, and productive team. By doing this you will:

Reduce Turnover

The individual feels appreciated for their knowledge.

  • 40% of US Employers estimate the cost of a bad hire is $25,000.00
  • Hard and soft turnover is 1.5-2.5 x’s of the annual salary.
  • Resulting in: opportunity loss, training costs, lower morale, performance decline, team drama, absenteeism, tardiness

Improve Team Engagement

Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2021 Report identified global employee engagement as very low with a rate of 20% / 34% US / CAN. Think of it as an equation in dentistry.

  • Team Member + Engagement = Retention

Increase Production

A team working cohesively and sharing the load will be far more productive than individuals working in silos without collaborating. Bi-Directional Leadership links everyone together, no matter what role they play on the team.

What It Takes

Where problems occur is when the boss is not a leader

Great leaders have specific qualities such as:

  • Mentor
  • Team player
  • Decision Maker
  • High Functioning Communicator (HFC)

Let’s face it many leaders possess some of these qualities but can’t check every box.

If you are a great decision maker, but not confident in your mentorship abilities, hire a coach and learn mentorship strategies or tap into a team member’s strength who has proven mentorship skills.

It is not the leaders’ job to have all the ideas, it is to make sure all the ideas are heard and collectively, the best idea is supported by the team.

When everyone’s voice is heard and valued we are inspired

to go beyond what is expected of us!

Worth Vs. Value

Let’s define worth vs value.

Say you have a painting in your closet Worth or appraised at $1M.

The Value of that painting is $0 if nobody sees it.

The Worth  of your child’s 1st-grade drawing = $0

But the Value is  PRICELESS!

Clinical Practice Translation

  1. Practicing Active Listening – The value of active listening is priceless!
  2. Office equipment – It is worth the investment to have the right tools.  The ROI is the value of effectiveness and efficiency.
  3. Employee hiring – The wrong employee for a lower salary will not benefit the practice.
  4. Retention – Continually recognizing the value each team member brings to the practice will ensure loyalty and unsolicited marketing.

Communicating Confidence with Team Members and Patients

Posted on August 4, 2022September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
Communicating Confidence with Team Members and Patients

Every dental team member deserves a fulfilling career in a highly functional dental practice, customized generational appreciation, and strategically developed intra-team and intra-department communications. These are necessary to make their career easy and enjoyable every day.

By communicating confidence with your team, your patient relationships become effortless to develop and nurture.

First Impressions

First impressions are lasting impressions. Research from New York University indicates that people make eleven major decisions about us in the first seven seconds of a meeting. It is referred to as the 7/11 Rule. These are important aspects of our lives, such as educational and economic levels, credibility, trustworthiness, sophistication, political background, and more! Fast judgments, made in just seven seconds, have a long-term impact.

Also, according to this study, we spend the rest of our time acquiring evidence to prove that our initial impression of that person or event was correct, whether it is or not. Learn more at Neural Circuitry of First Impressions.

The ‘secret sauce” to making a great first impression is to break the patterns of expectations, so your patients engage emotionally.

It’s All About Hospitality

A friendly smile and greeting for every patient. A personal story, family connection, or a referral reference. A topic you are comfortable with puts you and the patient at ease.

We’ve all encountered the receptionist that knows every patient and their family members the moment they enter your office. They remember vacation destinations, birthdays, graduations, and grandchildren! You may have “that” person on your team right now. Never let them go; they are an incredible asset to your practice.

There Are Rarely Second Chances

Because people want to believe their first impression was correct, they rarely give the person or dental practice a second chance. For most people, their first impression sticks.

How can we become more aware of how we are perceived as a dental practice and team?

One way is to watch people’s body language and note their reactions to our spoken words. Actions speak louder than words and can give us great insight into the tone the appointment may have.

Another strategy to make a more positive impression is to have an SOP, a Standard Operating Procedure, of how each situation in the office might play out. If you have communication guidelines for common interactions that occur regularly, you have prepared your team well.  You have also given them the confidence and empowerment to handle routine office communications. Understand that we cannot replicate every detail, but team members will be more prepared to react, particularly if they notice that the interaction is not going in a positive direction.

Introducing Protocols

Have an all-team meeting and decide, “What are the ten most common situations we have throughout the day?” Develop a script or a specific protocol of how these interactions should evolve.

The practice should analyze every interaction before, during, and after the appointment. All three aspects allow us to influence the patients’ impression positively. Again, having standardized procedures, processes, and conversations can help people walk through different experience expectations of the patient.

Before And After

As a before-experience example, a new patient calls to schedule an appointment, and they are immediately put on hold, or the office doesn’t answer the call. Instead, they play a message indicating they are with another patient or on another line. The number one aspect of creating a positive experience is taking care of the patient that is in the office. However, no phone call should ever be left ringing or going to voicemail. Make it a practice priority. Either of these situations creates a negative experience. Most patients aren’t going to wait, leave a message, or call back. They will hang up, move on, and your practice has lost a new patient.

People Want Help Now

People want to be taken care of immediately. We have to honor that. The positive aspect of immediate engagement is that we can thank them for calling our office and begin establishing a relationship. We’d love to help them eliminate pain or meet their dental wants and needs. Take the time to express appreciation and acknowledge the confidence they’ve put in us by calling our office for treatment.

Once they are an existing patient in the practice, make a special effort to get to know them personally: family members, where they go on vacation, who their grandkids are, who had a baby, and who’s graduating. Knowing personal details can help create a trusting relationship and loyalty to your practice. Be sure to make notes in the patient’s personal section of their chart, not in the clinical notes! This allows the team to get to know them as well.

Having a collaborative working relationship with all members of your dental team brings joy to the work we all do and excitement about serving our patients in clinical practice.

Is it Possible to Change Habits While Under Stress?

Posted on February 1, 2022September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
Is it Possible to Change Habits While Under Stress?

What does it take to initiate behavior change, particularly when under stress?

Last weekend I participated in a SAFE AS Avalanche Training clinic run by some of the most impressive professional skiers and snowboarders in the world.

It was a women’s tailored, avalanche awareness and safety clinic. With the intention to foster an open, welcoming, and enthusiastic environment to encourage participation and communication in the mountains during the winter safely.

What impressed me the most was that the entire day was customized and focused on intentional communication and strong leadership.

GET THE BASICS RIGHT

Avalanche rescue is incredibly stressful and requires following a non-negotiable, repetitive pattern of proven systems:

  1. Avoid avalanche terrain by studying and analyzing the snow, weather, forecast, and danger levels.
  2. All team participation in discussing the plan. 100% agreement on all goals.
  3. Perform equipment checks and select a leader best suited for the task.
  4. Successful rescues require repetitive practice and continual learning.
    • An avalanche victim has only 15 minutes to be rescued. Time and efficiency are critical
SAFE AS Avalanche Clinic, Solitude Resort, UT

LESSONS LEARNED

My lessons learned were many.

First, I needed a lot more practice and coaching before I head into the backcountry.

Second, the team you partner with should all have the same ethics, values, and goals.

Third, always following a systematic plan reduces the chance for errors and wasted time.

DENTAL PRACTICE TRANSLATION

As I reflected on the day, I realized that our dental practices could benefit from the lessons I learned from avalanche training with experienced coaches.

  1. By evaluating our current systems and processes regularly, we can discover vulnerabilities and apply new ways of working that help us avoid risks.
  2. All team members should have consistent, continual training.  Decisions and goals should be discussed with the entire team and everyone should be in agreement on not only the goals set but the path to achieving them.
  3. Check in with every team member on a regular basis. Now more than ever, we need to be sure everyone is feeling valued and included. Practice Bi-Directional Leadership to focus on everyone’s strengths. Watch the video below to learn more about Bi-Directional Leadership.
  4. Practice, adjust, practice, adjust! The more comfortable we are with the communication, the language, and the systems, the easier it is to change.  Particularly when under stress.

Just as in avalanche rescue, intentional, collaborative system development initiates efficient, effective, and successful dental practices.

We Got Engaged: Now We Are Deeply Committed!

Posted on August 4, 2021September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
We Got Engaged: Now We Are Deeply Committed!

A phone message from a dental practice I recently coached went like this: “We Got Engaged!”

“Our office communication and dynamics have improved significantly since we started actively listening and openly appreciating each other.”

The team attended a virtual CE course I delivered last month titled, Every Conversation Has Consequences.  A portion of the program focused on team engagement activities to elevate their: communication, respect, and appreciation.

Two of the activities they implemented to improve team commitment are detailed below.

GRATITUDE INTERVENTION JAR

Start by inviting all team members to regularly acknowledge someone or something in the practice that they are grateful for. Team members place the note into the gratitude jar.

Each week or month, share the messages at “all” team meetings to publicly acknowledge the amazing contributions being made by individuals towards your practice success.

PRACTICING THE PAUSE

Step 1: Partner with one person (1:1)

Step 2: First person asks a question.

Step 3: Second person’s answer begins with the last letter of the First person’s question.

  • Where do you go on vacatioN?
  • Normally, we go to the beach…

This activity enforces a conscious process:  Listen, Think, Pause, before Answering rather than crafting our answers while the question is being asked.

If you are looking for new, fun ideas to engage your team, try these!

You’ll be surprised the impact it will have on your team.

How To Focus on the Freedom of Emotional Safety

Posted on June 1, 2021September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
How To Focus on the Freedom of Emotional Safety

Emotional Safety relates to an individuals’ perceptions of the consequences of taking interpersonal risks.

A term that originally began in couples’ therapy meaning an emotional state where in each individual is open and vulnerable, has become adopted in the workplace. Emotional Safety (ES), also referred to as psychological safety, has become a hot topic in dentistry.

But what does it really mean?

ES relates to an individuals’ perceptions of the consequences of taking interpersonal risks. It also allows our teams the freedom to collaborate, be creative, share ideas, practice empathy, and express themselves freely, without the fear of being negatively judged.

Six Emotional Safety behaviors we can practice:

  1. Applaud Individualism
    • Recognize and award people for their unique super powers
  2. Promote Diversity and Inclusion
    • Exclusion, of any kind, can manifest into an unsafe emotional environment
  3. Positive Coaching
    • Recognize and reinforcing positive behaviors supports more positive behavior.
  4. Build Trust
    • Trust begins with cultivating relationships and increases slowly, over time.  Encourage our teams to support and appreciate each other
  5. Practice Empathy
    • This is essential for successful emotional safety. Take time to recognize what team members need, particularly when stress comes into play
  6. Maintain Alignment
    • Involving the team in updating processes and protocols will promote engagement

Start developing your emotional safety toolkit by nurturing one or two of the behaviors from above. Your practice will become known for creating a positive, safe environment for potential employees and patients.

How To Be The Unicorn Dental Office

Posted on March 2, 2021September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
How To Be The Unicorn Dental Office

DID YOU KNOW?

• You were the first office to ask: “How are you feeling about the appointment today?”
• You were the first dental team to ask: “How can we make you more comfortable throughout the appointment?”
• The positive impact you made on that patient motivated them to write an amazing social media review / testimony about your practice.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO BE A UNICORN PRACTICE?

Your practice can be unique, in many ways, during a very competitive time in dentistry.
By focusing on what the employee, patient or vendor wants, the relationships and outcomes will meet everyone’s expectations.

Keep in mind, every person has a different idea of what their “Unicorn Office” looks like and adjustments should be generationally applied to maximize results.

A UNICORN CAREER FOR EMPLOYEES

The younger the employee, the more unique your compensations should be to attract and retain them.
Ten practice strategies to consider are:

  1. Exercise Honesty / Empathy
  2. Utilize Emerging Technology
  3. Provide Benefits
  4. Offer Schedule Flexibility
  5. Provide Continual Mentorship
  6. Assist with Daycare / Pet Care
  7. Extend Flexible / Rollover PTO
  8. Support a Community / Global Cause
  9. Contribute to a Health Club Membership
  10. Support Wellness Programs

The last two, could reduce costs over time.
If your employees are healthy, your employee benefits packages could be negotiated for lower premiums rates.

A UNICORN PRACTICE FOR PATIENTS

Patients are looking at healthcare providers and practices differently.  Below are some of the “wants” our patients are seeking. By implementing these ideas into your marketing strategy, you will attract more patients and experience faster practice growth.

  1. Demonstrate Honesty – particularly when relating to insurance acceptance
  2. Offer Financial Assistance
  3. Provide Flexible Scheduling
  4. Deliver Same-Day Dentistry
  5. Maintain 5-Star Online Reviews
  6. Recognize / Appreciate Patient Testimonials
  7. Text Appointment Reminders
  8. Incentivize Patient Referrals
  9. Run On-Time
  10. Culture a Friendly Team

A UNICORN OFFICE FOR VENDOR PARTNERSHIPS

Never underestimate the influence of your vendors!

The supply companies your practice work with every day are powerful resources for employee and patient referrals.  A respectful, professional relationship will keep your practice top of mind.  Not only for elite customer specials, but also for referring new patients and informing you first about potential employee candidates.

A bi-directional relationship with your vendor will support your practice and their products.  It’s a win-win approach.

How to Focus on Emotional Safety

Posted on February 2, 2021September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
How to Focus on Emotional Safety

Creating space that allows for courageous conversations is the fundamental element for emotional safety and enforces a unified work environment where innovation thrives.

  • Has your operatory comfort zone shifted from a safe haven to an uncomfortable hazard zone?
  • Do you feel secure enough to share thoughts / ideas freely, without worrying about negative reactions?
  • Are you simply coping to make it through the day?

Dental practices can follow three strategies to create an emotionally safe environment: aviate, navigate, and communicate

Aviation a verb, meaning to fly or operating an aircraft.  Our “aircraft” is our practice, driven by systems, which provide us with a solid foundation to build on. We continually aviate on many levels. Designing customized processes leads to: Predictability, Productivity, Consistency, and Clarity.

Navigation is about cultivating high-courage teams with diverse, problem solving skills. We can’t anticipate every issue that may occur, but everyone can prepare themselves with skills that will help them successfully navigate through an unanticipated situation.

Making Emotional Safety part of everyday culture can be challenging and requires skills to accelerate Communication to SurThrival. It is a fragile ecosystem that requires continual nurturing.

Build a team and patient-centric culture by understanding that each person has a different interpretation of experiences that they compare to their own expectations. Rise to their hopes by learning and practicing empathy, flexibility, and active listening.

George Bernard Shaw said, “The Single Biggest Problem in Communication is the Illusion That It Has Taken Place.”

Are you: Soaring, Coasting, or Diving to implement emotional safety in your practice?

Are You Practicing Digital Compassion?

Posted on November 3, 2020September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
Are You Practicing Digital Compassion?

A unique communication approach is the most effective way to get back on track.

Be proactive and deliver the wanted and needed information, before your patients ask questions, or even worse…speculates.

WHAT DOES PRACTICING DIGITAL COMPASSION MEAN?

Connecting with your patient community on several platforms with a variety of messages that emphasize empathy and compassion.

  • Create a short, 1-minute videos on various topics for the patients to watch to increase their trust and comfort levels.
  • Use varying technology to communicate on a more personal level.
  • Create broader email messages that will reach your entire database.  Be sure to personalize the message.
  • Update your website and social media platforms to appeal to your younger team members and patients.

ANSWER THE PATIENTS BURNING QUESTIONS

What is the new appointment screening process?

  • Paperless / Digital
  • Phone call / Email / Text

What have you done to make the patient feel safe when they visit your practice?

  • Digital check-in
  • Entrance / Exit flow modifications
  • Decreasing aerosals / Air filtration
  • PPE

What changes have the team implemented to protect themselves as well as the patient?

  • Staggered schedules
  • Office hour adjustments
  • Additional team members
  • Paperless / No contact
  • Plexiglass installation

What should patients expect at their appointment?

  • Great topic for a video!

Are you offering telehealth visits?

Telehealth is not new, however, patients are now ready to embrace the hybrid care model.  Teledentistry is for the short and long term plan.

Immediate application is to decrease risk and provide patient safety.

It can also limit the DDS movement between patients which calculates into more uninterrupted, productive appointment time. For example, no hygiene exams.

  • SolutionReach developed a fantastic guide for utilizing telehealth, which includes coding and billing scenarios.
  • A Complete Guide to Using Telemedicine in Your Practice.

Expand your digital footprint by practicing digital compassion.

You will create unique avenues of communication with your patients that enhance relationships and generate practice growth.

How Will Gen Z Change Dentistry?

Posted on July 7, 2020September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
How Will Gen Z Change Dentistry?
COVID-19 IMPACT ON GEN Z

Gen Z (age 4-early 20’s) comprise 25% of the U.S. population, making them the largest cohort yet.
Research is indicating that the COVID-19 pandemic is the Generational Defining Moment for Gen Z, particularly as they transition into adulthood. COVID-19 has impacted almost every aspect of their lives. It will impact how Gen Z spends money, learns, and works.

Gen Z has strong heads and strong values, making them hard to attract from a marketing perspective and even harder to gain loyalty from. How do we translate the information we know about Gen Z into applicable everyday use to attract employees and patients?

Build a dental practice that speaks their language and meets their expectations now to guarantee future practice growth.

COVID-19 IMPACT ON GEN Z

SPENDING

  • Gen Z is already more frugal than Gen Y, thanks to their conservative Gen X parents and growing up through the 2008 Great Recession.
  • Gen Z are hyper-aware of their dental health, with the top oral health problem this generation reports being pain, predominantly with biting and chewing.
  • Gen Z will not take risks they may not be able to afford to address in later life, which makes them more receptive to the latest research and treatment options to maintain dental health.

EMPLOYMENT

  • Before COVID-19 Gen Z were already saving for retirement
  • Job benefits are driving factors
  • As employers, recognize that individuals within Gen Z are used to instant access and are motivated by efficiency
  • Provide tools that promote ease and simplicity and tasks that are intuitive and not process-heavy
  • Despite their technology knowledge, Gen Z crave human interaction, openness and collaboration
  • Provide opportunities to grow and learn skills

While Gen Z may not have yet reached critical mass as patients or employees, they are already disproportionately driving changes the rest of us feel. Understanding who they are and what they want NOW gives us insight of what to expect for the future of our dental practices.

Being successful in attracting new employees and patients will require flexibility and adaptability to keep up and deliver on the wants and needs of this generation. If it’s not instant, it’s not for Gen Z!

For any leader, the pandemic creates a critical opportunity to understand and respect how Gen Z are experiencing these challenging times through their own generational lens.

Dental Office Recovery is an IRONMAN, not a Sprint

Posted on June 17, 2020September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
Dental Office Recovery is an IRONMAN, not a Sprint
Lisa Competing in Coeur d’ Alene Ironman

iRONMAN COMMUNICATION TIP

DENTAL PRACTICE RECOVERY IS AN IRONMAN, NOT A SPRINT. PACE YOURSELF.

DENTAL DRILLS

Many years of endurance event training taught me to pace myself, remain open to adjustments on the fly, and stay positive.
All while keeping my eye on the long term goal: the first being to finish, the second, to improve.

As we begin the dental practice recovery phase, I am reminded of that same strategy.

ARE YOU GETTING TO THE ROOT OF YOUR PROBLEM?

What recovery processes and strategies can we create habits for now that will get us to the finish line?

PACE

We are in this for the long haul.  Trying to dive back into our previous schedule model will create frustration for everyone. The key is to build a “training plan” that rolls out in stages.

To give you an idea of how the dental practices across the country are recovering, In March, 2020, the ADA Health Policy Institute launched a tracking poll:  COVID-19 Economic Impact on Dental Practices. A report is published every 2 weeks. The chart below reveals some of the most recent findings

FLEXIBILITY

Dentistry as we knew it has changed…forever.
The silver lining is, we can now implement changes that will increase our success in the future.
Embrace the recommended changes. Tap into your reputable resources and re-hire / hire the right people to help you reinvent best practices.
Work collaboratively to implement new ideas, provide feedback, and continually adjust to maximize efficiency and productivity.

Three target areas that are revealed consistently with many of my clients are:
Team communication is an essential skill. Communicating early, often and clearly in: morning huddles, weekly team meetings, and monthly team meetings, everyone is well informed and included in decision making.
Implementing  / Updating Software Systems:  Customized messaging, Digital forms, Teledentistry, Online payments.
Leadership Skills:  Everyone is a leader with a special super power.  We can accomplish much more when we empower each other , focus on our strengths, and work harmoniously rather than in silos.

POSITIVITY

Looking  forward, with an action plan and a goal, will get you over finish line. Dentistry is a team sport and everyone should be running in the same direction, with a positive attitude.

According to a Gallup Workplace, a recently published meta-analysis reveals that the relationship between employee engagement and performance changes during crises. Read the full meta-analysis — “Increased Business Value for Positive Job Attitudes During Economic Recessions” — in Human Performance.

Gallup Workforce also published: Is Your Culture Resilient Enough to Survive Coronavirus?

Revealing five engagement elements that make a difference in company survival:
* Clear expectations
* The right materials and equipment ( think PPE, software, instruments)
* Opportunities for employees to do what they do best
* Connection to the mission or purpose of the organization
* Coworkers committed to quality work

We like to learn about and try new trails to mountain bike on regularly.  If I am being honest, my husband is much more adventurous than me.
It is good practice for me to try new things and push myself out of my comfort zone.

Since the only constant in dentistry right now is change, it supports the “can do” attitude and adaptability needed to re-build our practices.
A great reminder that being flexible is an advantageous quality to strive for in the COVID-19 transition.

Courageous Conversations for a Healthy Dental Practice

Posted on May 11, 2020September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland
Courageous Conversations for a Healthy Dental Practice

Courageous Conversations with your dental team allow us to create a plan that ensures everyone’s safety as we weather out this storm. By applying some basic principles, you will:

  • Build Relationships
  • Keep people informed
  • Build trust

The result: Your practice will not only survive, you will thrive.

According to Gallup Research: A mere 13% of employees strongly agree the leadership of their organization communicates effectively with the rest of the organization. The remaining 87% leaves a lot of room for misinformation to spread.

Take charge of communication with your team.
They crave more discussion than ever before!

BE THE 13%THAT COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY

Be honest:
* What you see coming based on predicted revenue facts
* What cost controls will be put into place
* Specific PPE guidelines that will be adopted
* When or if tough decisions will need to be made about jobs
* What is known (or not) while practicing empathy and honesty
* Discuss a possible need to consider expanded or reconfigure office hours once your practice re-opens
* How you will adjust process / procedures to re-open?
* Be flexible as we navigate this new territory

Start with weekly team meetings and morning huddles every day.Have an agenda but also invite open conversations.Add rumor busting to your meeting agendas so information the team hears is accurate.

Value Trumps Worth

Posted on January 31, 2020September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland

iRONMAN Communication Tip

Are you hiring employees, purchasing office equipment / supplies, or updating technology based on the price rather than the value it will add to you practice?

If the answer is yes, you are not alone.

Employees:

The younger the employee, the more money matters.  By hiring the “right person”, one that is: a team player, consistently contributes to practice growth, and leads the team with confidence, is worth paying more than the going rate. By appealing to their language of appreciation, you will reduce turnover, increase engagement, and instill loyalty.  Creating a customer centric experience for your team AND your patients is the critical in our competitive dental world.

Office Supplies:

Is the store brand of paper that cost a few dollars less worth the aggravation of the printer jamming several times a day?  Not to mention, the wasted time every incident.  I just fell for this recently, and I regretted it every time I sent to print.  Especially with double sided printing…JAM! Each time you consider making a purchase, or think about switching brands, consult with the team member that is using the product and check in. It might decrease your overhead, but increase inefficiency of tasks.

Read my latest blog HERE relating to breaking and creating new habits.

Technology:

You purchased a “WHAT” for the clinical team?  Best to discuss large purchases with the team before investing so you know it will enhance, not inhibit, productivity.  As a team, make a list of questions to address before the purchase:

· How will the investment positively impact our practice?

· What is the goal we are trying to achieve?

· Will it make our day more efficient / productive?

· Who will be trained to use the item?

· What is the timeline for training?

· Will we have updated training regularly?

· Is there anyone on our team that has expertise already?

Dental Drills

Are you always on the hunt for the best deals and switching products based on price? Many dental offices follow this pattern.

Loyalty to a brand / company, that may cost a little more, can actually increase your practice production. Companies are looking for loyalty and referrals.  Everything is negotiable and customizable to your suit your      practice wants and needs.

A few carrots that companies dangle are:

· Membership pricing

· Additional product bundle pricing

· Designated sales support

· Consistent relationships / customer service

· Advanced new product privileges

Are You Getting to the Root of Your Problem?

Value trumps worth!  Whether it’s an employee salary, purchasing pens for the office, or investing in new technology, “less” does not equal “more”.

Where in The World is Lisa?

What a fabulous way to start 2020, presenting two workshops at the Rocky Mountain Dental Conference (RMDC) in Denver, CO this month. You might recognize the famous CO Convention Center Bear in my photo.

I started the three day event by attending two  workshops.  I find it so valuable to attend other speakers sessions so I can pick up new information and refer to it during my presentations.  The courses, speakers, and entire meeting was fantastic.

Connecting with long time friend and rock star speaker, Betsy Reynolds, and NSA friend / colleague, Nora Burns were also highlights of the weekend. Thanks to Nora for jumping in as my room host, professional photographer, networking champion, and so much more!

Shout out to my sponsor for the event, Lighthouse.  A huge thank you for all the sponsors that make the event such a success.

Whether we are the leader of a practice or spreading our message from the podium…it is a team sport!  Teamwork enhances creativity, productivity, and positivity. Let’s all work together to be the best we can.

Dental Team Rewards and Recognition

Posted on December 2, 2019September 22, 2022 by Lisa Copeland

I take this awesome class at my gym regularly called Power Hour.

At the end of the workout, the instructor announced she had three gifts for people that regularly work hard, encourage others, and never complain. Much to my surprise I was the first announced!  What a treat to be rewarded unexpectedly!

It got me thinking.  People are always watching.

What would happen if we rewarded people, and expressed our appreciation regularly? We would all work a little harder, encourage people a little more, and build stronger relationships.

REWARDS AND RECOGNITION

What does this look like in a dental practice?
It starts with getting to know your team.
What action or reaction would have the biggest impact on that particular team member.
The best way to get this answer is to ask!

Hint:  Think generationally.

  • Boomer:  Public recognition and an award or a temporary title
  • Gen X:  A “hall pass” to leave an hour early for a family event
  • Gen Y:  Immediate recognition / feedback and a gift card
  • Gen Z:  Donation to a cause they are passionate about

CONSISTENCY IS KEY

Determine what the best language of appreciation to speak to each team member and practice on a regular basis. You don’t have to break the bank, but be creative with titles and recognition awards.

Add a rewards and recognition section to your ‘Practice News’ each month and include a photo and a quote from the recipient. Take it one step further, if the action included a patient, and include them also! Just be sure to get their permission.

Taking a little detour from the topic. Name your communication with your patients NEWS instead of Newsletter. It is a more progressive / hip marketing term that younger clientele will better relate to.

CONCLUSION

We all want to feel appreciated and most of us love to be recognized for a job well done.  It motivates us to continue the behavior.  Positivity is contagious.  Pass it on!
